NYSSMA or New York State School Music Association, is a state wide event where young musicians have the opportunity to be evaluated by professional musicians and to participate in county, state and all eastern conferences, choruses and performances.

NYSSMA Voice is divided into 6 levels.  I would check with your chorus teacher about which level is right for you.

Below you will find some helpful resources to prepare your NYSSMA solos.

The highest level, 6, makes distinctions between voice parts. From highest to lowest these voices are: Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto 1, Alto 2, Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Bass 1 and Bass 2.  Those competing in level 6 are usually Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors in High School.  Freshmen will generally perform a level 5 piece for NYSSMA.

To compete, singers must have a song from the approved list in the NYSSMA catalog.  To help you prepare I am including information and recordings of several common pieces that are on the current list.

More about NYSSMA

The Mission of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA®) is to advocate for and improve music education across New York State by promoting and producing appropriate activities and programs for its membership and students in member school music programs.

One of the major events that they sponsor is a competition/evaluation of students.  Those scoring well go onto to be part of All-County, All-State and All-Eastern Choirs.  This gives young musicians a chance to work with other young musicians and professional conductors.  It also gives an important motivation for young singers.
